3M 8902 is a polyester masking tape with silicone adhesive. Its translucent blue backing is used for industrial masking, including powder-coating processes.
Construction and application fit
This model uses a polyester film backing rather than a fiberglass carrier. The film supports masking areas where the process needs a defined boundary and subsequent tape removal. Check film thickness and stiffness against the smallest feature in the masking pattern.
Selection and validation
Record the complete cure cycle, including peak temperature and exposure time. Test edge sealing, removal timing and residue on the actual coating and substrate. Consider any silicone contamination restrictions in downstream painting or bonding operations.
